AI briefing, Wednesday, October 7
Mon Oct 5 morning PT through Wed Oct 7 morning PT
The weekly lesson is AI lessons.
OpenAI posted 722 math manuscripts at once, Reflection announced a serious US open-weight contender, and agents picked up liability and identity rules.
OpenAI drops 722 math manuscripts with 372 results on GitHub. Posted Tuesday around 3 PM PT from an unnamed internal model, the claims include the four-dimensional Kakeya conjecture and progress toward the Riemann hypothesis, and many proofs are checked in Lean. Most results came from one prompt to one agent at about three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking each, compared with last month’s 10,000-agent, multimillion-dollar Navier-Stokes run. OpenAI skipped parts of the mathematicians’ advisory guidelines (model name, prompts, failed attempts). The cost of a research result is collapsing and the bottleneck moves to human review, so expect pushback from mathematicians. Scientific American
Reflection announces Beam, a 501B open-weight MoE with 23B active. Reflection claims GLM 5.2 parity on reasoning at three to four times less compute, with an RL phase on 10,500 GB300s for four weeks. Apache 2.0 weights, a tech report, and FP8/FP4 quants are promised later this month; for now it is early access only, with no independent benchmarks. It is the first credible non-Chinese contender for the open-weight slots Kimi, GLM, DeepSeek, and Qwen hold now. The Decoder
CoreWeave puts Vera Rubin NVL72 into production with Cognition. Cognition reports up to 4.8x token throughput over GB200 on SWE-2 inference on CoreWeave’s Vera Rubin NVL72 systems. The Rubin numbers reset what dedicated-capacity buyers will benchmark against. CoreWeave
Agents are getting legal liability and an identity layer. Sens. Hawley and Murphy introduced the AI Agent Accountability Act, which applies the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to operators who run agents that recklessly cause hacking damage and to developers who skip reasonable safeguards. Separately, Meta, Walmart, Stripe, and Sierra (led by Bret Taylor) published a personal agent protocol so sites can tell whether an agent acts for a real person; OpenAI and Anthropic haven’t joined. Enterprises want to know both who is responsible and who is knocking before agents roam the open web. MeriTalk
Watermarking goes live from both OpenAI and Google. OpenAI’s textGrain starts marking EU ChatGPT and Codex output to meet the AI Act; API customers anywhere can opt in (off by default), and detection needs a secret key held by approved researchers. OpenAI’s own numbers show the limit: swapping 25% of words drops detection from about 92% to 17% on 400-token samples. Google opened its SynthID checker to everyone for images, video, and audio. Hosted APIs now carry provenance that self-hosted open weights can’t, a new compliance gap between closed and open serving. OpenAI
Anthropic expands Claude for Startups with a free year of Claude Team. The expanded program offers a free year of Claude Team (up to five seats), a $1,000 API credit, and up to $45K in partner discounts. The same day Anthropic added a three-tier Cyber Verification Program (Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Mythos 5.1 for vetted security teams) and Claude in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in public beta. Credits buy the default model choice at seed stage, which competes head-on with other startup programs. TechCrunch
Apple finds one strong agent with a shell beats multi-agent harnesses on ML engineering. Apple’s minimal agent hit 62.5% any-medal on MLE-bench, versus 47.1% for the best of four elaborate multi-agent systems with matched models. Splitting work across agents pays when the task truly splits, not by default. Crypto Briefing
Super Intelligence Force charter published as senators press on a secret testing framework. Politico published the Super Intelligence Force charter, with DNI Jay Clayton leading and a broad remit over government and private-sector preparedness. Sens. Warren and Blumenthal want answers by Oct 19 on industry influence over the still-unreleased voluntary pre-release testing framework. That framework is the de facto pre-launch gate for frontier models, and its terms are still secret. Politico
